Nature of Chinese Wolfberry: Neutral; sweet; attributive to liver and kidneys. Characteristics: The fruits of a common shrub, small and oval in shape, reddish orange with a sweet but coarse taste. A superior herb, a popular health tonic since ancient times in China and is widely used in many longevity formulas. Particularly good for eyes and strengthen weak legs and knees for the elderly. Therapeutic Effects: Nourish kidney-yin; tonify liver-yin deficiency; treat deficiency of essence and blood manifested as dizziness, blurring of vision, hypopsia, tinnitus, emisssion and soreness of the loin and extremities; relieves chronic thirst and emollient to lungs; also for diabetes. Nature of Longan: The drug is in form of longitudinally ruptured irregular pieces, and often, several pieces adhere each other. A single piece is about 1.5 cm long, 2-4 cm wide and 0.1 cm thick. It is semitransparent, brown in colour. One side of it is rugose and uneven wile the other side is bright with fine longitudinal creases. The aril is supple and moist in texture and gives out a faintly aromatic smell and sweet taste. Therapeutic Effects: Having the efficacy of tonifying the heart and spleen and nourishing the blood to calm the mind, longan aril is an effective tonic usually administered for insufficiency of qi and blood due to impairment of the heart and spleen resulting from overstrain, manifested as palpitation, amnesia and insomnia. Applied individually, it can be decocted or steeped in hot water to be taken orally to cure deficiency of qi and blood in the old and the weak during their convalescence.
